The pivot is the phrase sons of God. For the last hundred years a comfortable interpretation has spread through Christian seminaries that says the "sons of God" were merely the line of Seth, and the "daughters of men" were merely the line of Cain, and that the "giants" were merely impressive but ordinary humans. That reading collapses on contact with the rest of the Bible. The phrase sons of God appears in only a handful of places in the Old Testament. Every single one of those places refers to angels. Now there was a day when the sons of God came to present themselves before the LORD, and Satan came also among them. — J O B 1 : 6 When the morning stars sang together, and all the sons of God shouted for joy? — J O B 3 8 : 7

How huge? And there we saw the giants, the sons of Anak, which come of the giants: and we were in our own sight as grasshoppers, and so we were in their sight. — N U M B E R S 1 3 : 3 3 The Israelite spies, full grown men, looked at the giants in Canaan and felt like grasshoppers. They said the giants saw them the same way. That is not a reading flourish. That is the inspired record. So when Genesis 6 says there were giants in the earth in those days, the Bible is not naming celebrities or warlords. It is naming a race of beings that were the offspring of fallen angels and human women, and were so large that grown men looked like crickets next to them. The sentence after the giants is the one most people skim past. It is the most important sentence in the chapter. And the LORD said, I will destroy man whom I have created from the face of the earth; both man, and beast, and the creeping thing, and the fowls of the air; for it repenteth me that I have made them. — G E N E S I S 6 : 7
