If Screwtape’s Department Wrote Today II: A Letter Regarding Mothers

As many of you have read on my husband’s page we’ve had quite a lot of sickness in our house/family these past couple of weeks. Blake was in the hospital with pneumonia and bronchitis (praise the Lord he is finally well! 🙌🏻). I’ve had tonsillitis, Adam currently has double pneumonia, and our middle daughter currently has bronchitis.

Due to this I’m going to be reposting a popular series from earlier in the year this week! Please pray for our family to be well, and everyone stay healthy out there!

Please enjoy this series from the archives

A Letter from Senior Tempter Grinwell to Apprentice Mothwick

(Department of Maternal Corruption, Division of Little Souls)

My dear Mothwick,

Your next assignment is among the most delicate.

Few tasks delight our ranks more than sabotaging a mother, for by weakening her, we weaken her entire home.

If you can spoil the woman who shapes the children, you may cripple generations in one blow.

So pay close attention to the following instructions.

Begin with her identity.

Convince her that motherhood is beneath her.

Whisper daily that she is far too important, talented, gifted, and ambitious to “waste her life” wiping noses, correcting tantrums, and folding small laundry.

Tell her the career ladder is where true worth is found.

The world will cheer her for pursuing herself, which works wonderfully in our favor.

A mother who views her children as obstacles to success will soon neglect the souls entrusted to her.

Do not allow her to consider that the Enemy designed motherhood to require sacrifice.

The very word will repulse her if you keep feeding her the notion that she must “protect her time,” “guard her energy,” and “put herself first.”

These ideas appear harmless on the surface, but if she embraces them fully, her children will grow up emotionally starved while she applauds herself for “self care.”

Next, you must distract her.

Screens are your finest tool.

Social media, especially.

Feed her content that fuels comparison, vanity, outrage, and discontent.

If she scrolls enough, her children will naturally drift into silence or mischief without her noticing.

Encourage her to use screens as babysitters. Tablets, phones, televisions.

The child grows quiet, and she feels “productive,” which pleases us greatly.

Never let her realize she is training her children to be soothed by devices instead of discipline.

Speaking of discipline, be certain she resents her husband’s attempts to lead.

If he is a godly man who tries to institute order and correction, stir up her emotions.

Make her think he is being too harsh.

Tell her she is “protecting her babies” by resisting biblical discipline.

A divided parental front is a goldmine.

If she overrides the father’s correction, the children will quickly learn whom to obey.

TRADITIONAL BIBLICAL HOMEMAKING

The culture told you the home was a cage. Christie built this because she found it to be a kingdom. A no-nonsense, biblically grounded guide to homemaking that actually dignifies the woman doing it.

They will choose the parent who requires least from them.

This will breed rebellion early, and rebellion is one of our favorite seeds.

Encourage her to play favorites.

Mothers are susceptible to this if you apply the right pressure.

One child will remind her of herself, another will frustrate her, and you must widen the emotional gap.

The favored child grows proud.

The unfavored grows bitter.

Both become spiritually vulnerable.

Next, ruin her ability to enjoy staying home.

Do this by whispering repeatedly that homemaking is useless drudgery.

Suggest that anyone can raise her kids.

Convince her that daycare workers, teachers, coaches, friends, neighbors, or whoever happens to be available will do just fine.

If she believes her presence is optional, she will leave her children with nearly anyone to get some time alone.

The less she supervises their environment, the easier it is for us to corrupt innocence early.

Make her impatient in public.

Encourage her to let her children scream in restaurants, run wild in stores, and behave without manners. Call it “expressive.”

Tell her other people should “mind their own business.”

If she never teaches self-control, the child will enter adulthood already enslaved to the whims of the flesh.

Wonderful training for our side.

When the children demand something, push her toward appeasement.

If they scream, encourage her to give in.

Let her justify it as “choosing peace.”

The more she rewards bad behavior, the quicker the child learns manipulation.

Teach them to throw fits and get their way.

Later, this will mature into entitlement, selfishness, and spiritual blindness.

Here is another important tactic.

Convince her homeschooling is too heavy, too dull, too much work.

Whisper that she deserves the break.

Let the government shape their worldview.

Let the teachers define morality.

Let the system tell them who they are.

If she can be persuaded to view her children’s education as a nuisance, the Enemy loses one of the most powerful pipelines of truth transfer.

A mother who abdicates instruction gives us free access.

Most importantly, keep her too weary, too distracted, or too self-absorbed to pray.

A praying mother is a threat beyond measure.

If she ever gets on her knees for her children, all your work may unravel.

So fill her hours with busyness.

Fill her mind with noise.

Fill her heart with resentment.

Anything to keep her from interceding.

If you succeed, her home will be in chaos.

Her marriage will strain.

Her children will drift.

Her husband will feel disrespected.

Her calling will be despised.

And the future generation will be spiritually thin and morally directionless.

All because one mother believed she was too important for the calling Heaven gave her.

Continue accordingly.

Your devoted superior,

Grinwell
