The morning sun had barely risen over Jerusalem when a little boy took hold of a rope and began the familiar walk toward the Tabernacle.
Beside him trotted a spotless lamb.
The lamb had been born only months before. The boy had fed it by hand. He had carried it when it was small. He knew the softness of its wool beneath his fingers and the sound of its bleating when it heard his voice.
Yet today was different.
Today was the Day of Atonement.
As they drew closer to the Tabernacle, the crowds thickened. Families arrived from every direction, each bringing a sacrifice. The smell of smoke already drifted through the morning air.
The boy’s grip tightened on the rope.
His father had explained it many times.
Sin requires a sacrifice.
Blood must be shed.
Someone must die.
The lamb had done nothing wrong.
The lamb had never lied.
Never disobeyed.
Never sinned.
Yet the lamb would die because of another’s guilt.
When the priest finally took the lamb from his hands, the little boy stood silently watching. A tear slid down his cheek as the lamb disappeared into the crowd.
In a trembling voice, almost too quiet to hear, he whispered,
“My little lamb, you cannot stay. For my sin, the price you must pay. A sacrifice so great. My little lamb, you must go away.”
And for a moment, heaven grew still.
For the God who sat upon the throne had watched scenes like this unfold for generations.
Millions of lambs.
Millions of sacrifices.
Millions of reminders.
Yet none of them could truly take sin away.
They awaited something greater.
Awaited Someone greater.
Before the foundations of the world were laid, God already knew what would be required.
The day would come when another Lamb would walk toward another sacrifice.
Not from a shepherd’s field.
Not from a family flock.
But from the throne room of heaven itself.
And when that day arrived, the Father would watch His own beloved Son leave the glory He had known from eternity.
He would watch Him take on flesh.
Watch Him be mocked.
Watch Him be rejected.
Watch Him carry a cross.
Watch Him climb a hill called Calvary.
And there, upon that hill, the true Lamb would stand.
The Lamb whom Abraham unknowingly referenced on the way up the mount to sacrifice Isaac when he said: “My son, God will provide himself a lamb…” Gen 22:8 KJV
The Lamb whom Isaiah described hundreds of years before His birth:
“He was oppressed, and he was afflicted, yet he opened not his mouth: he is brought as a lamb to the slaughter, and as a sheep before her shearers is dumb, so he openeth not his mouth.” Isaiah 53:7 KJV
The Lamb whom John the Baptist would one day announce:
“Behold the Lamb of God, which taketh away the sin of the world.” John 1:29
As Christ walked toward the cross, heaven knew what was happening.
The angels watched.
Creation trembled.
And if words could be heard from the throne itself, perhaps they would have sounded something like this:
“Almighty Lamb, You cannot stay. To redeem mankind, the price You must pay. My only Son, I give away. Almighty Lamb, You must go today.”
Then came the nails.
The thorns.
The darkness.
The judgment.
The wrath that belonged to us poured out upon Him.
The spotless, perfect, Almighty Lamb died in the place of sinners.
Not because He deserved death.
Because we did.
Three days later, the stone rolled away.
Death was conquered.
The grave was defeated.
Victorious.
Glorious.
Forever worthy.
And now every redeemed sinner can lift their eyes toward heaven and say with gratitude too deep for words:
Hallelujah!! Praise the Lamb.
Praise the Lamb who took my place.
Praise the Lamb who bore my sin.
Praise the Lamb whose blood washed me clean.
Praise the Lamb who rescued my soul from hell and gave me everlasting life.
One day I shall stand among the redeemed, clothed in His righteousness, looking upon the scars that purchased my salvation.
And when I see Him face to face, I think my heart will say what it has longed to say all along:
Your sacrifice washed away every sin!
Your sacrifice redeemed my soul!
Your sacrifice fulfilled every promise!
Almighty Lamb, I am so glad You came!
