Adam Was Standing Right There

You know the version that gets told.

Eve took the fruit. Eve ate. Eve gave it to Adam. Weak woman, weak man, game over. Adam ends up a victim of his wife.

Now open the text.

“And when the woman saw that the tree was good for food, and that it was pleasant to the eyes, and a tree to be desired to make one wise, she took of the fruit thereof, and did eat, and gave also unto her husband with her; and he did eat.” Genesis 3:6

Two words sit in the middle of that sentence doing all the work.

With her.

She did not hunt him down. She did not carry the fruit across the garden to wherever he was working. She turned and handed it to the man at her elbow. Because he was there. The whole time.

The serpent talked. Adam listened.

She reached for the fruit. Adam watched.

She ate. Adam waited.

Then she handed it across a foot of silence, and he took it.

Genesis never lets Adam leave the scene. We do it for him.

I have been this man. Quiet at the moment that mattered. Smooth at the trial that followed.

Watch him. God shows up, and the first man opens his mouth:

“The woman whom thou gavest to be with me, she gave me of the tree, and I did eat.” Genesis 3:12

Count the targets. His wife. And God. “The woman whom THOU gavest.” Eleven words, and he blames everybody in the garden except the one man who stood there and said nothing.

It still runs in houses. She watched it happen and begged him to say something. He called his silence keeping the peace.

It was not peace. It was cowardice with good manners.

Here is the part nobody tells you before they ask for your money.

The question God asks first. It is not “what have you done.” It is better.

The death sentence is still echoing when Adam names his wife. What he names her will rearrange how you read the whole chapter.

The first death in the Bible is not Abel. Somebody dies in Genesis 3 so Adam and Eve can walk out clothed.

And what the tree of the knowledge of good and evil actually was. The prophet Ezekiel saw it too, and trees in his vision do something trees cannot do.
