You Think Jesus Is the Weird Part?

Some people think I’m crazy for believing in Jesus.

Brother, I believe God made a donkey talk. Actual words. And the man riding her answered back.

I also believe the sons of God in Genesis 6 were heavenly beings who took human women as wives. That’s the angelic reading of the passage. Christians disagree about it. Here’s what we have to account for:

“There were giants in the earth in those days; and also after that, when the sons of God came in unto the daughters of men, and they bare children to them, the same became mighty men which were of old, men of renown.”

Genesis 6:4, KJV

Women bore children. Giants were in the earth. The chapter goes on to describe a world filled with violence, and God tells Noah to build.

You can disagree with my reading of the sons of God. Open the chapter and make the case. Laughing at it won’t settle who they were.

Jude 6 describes angels who left their own habitation and are held in chains for judgment. I read that alongside Genesis 6. Jude doesn’t supply every missing detail, but he certainly doesn’t describe a universe empty of rebellious beings.

Then somebody hands me a claim about thirteen families running the world for Satan, with bloodlines traced back to the giants.

Show me the evidence for that genealogy.

Believing Genesis doesn’t give me the missing birth certificates. I’m willing to be laughed at for what I believe Scripture teaches. I still want evidence when somebody starts naming living families.

Now, about that donkey.

In Numbers 22, Balaam’s animal sees the angel of the LORD standing in the road with a drawn sword. Balaam doesn’t. She turns aside, presses against a wall, and finally lies down. He beats her.

God opens her mouth. She asks what she’s done to deserve it.

Balaam answers that she’s mocked him. He wishes he had a sword so he could kill her.

There is already a sword in the road.

The animal he wants dead has been keeping him alive.

When God opens Balaam’s eyes, he sees the angel. Then he learns what would have happened if she’d kept going: he would have been killed, and she would have lived.

Laugh at the talking donkey if you want. Balaam was on her back, furious at the thing that could see what he couldn’t.

I don’t want to read that account and spend all my energy explaining why God couldn’t have done it. I want to understand why He did, what Balaam was doing, and why the animal had to stop him.

That’s the work I want to keep doing here. Put Genesis beside Jude. Examine the arguments about who these beings were. Follow the passages instead of letting the strangest claim win.

I believe Jesus Christ rose from the dead. I’m already committed to a claim that changes what can be possible. I intend to keep reading the rest of the Book.
